At the Beach

It was not just Mr Darcy's arms that she missed that night. Before she was able to mourn their absence the next morning when she woke up cold and uncomfortable, she was made to feel his absence in another way too. It was his conversation she missed. Previously, she was soothed by the comforting sound of his voice as he teased her into feeling safe and understood. That night it took her a long while to relax and she found it difficult to find rest without anyone to turn to.

Bingley and Jane whispered to one another for a short time, she could not hear what, and then there was nothing but silence.

In the morning Mr Darcy was gone with Mr Bingley to explore the island, and Elizabeth realised that the fishing trip the previous day was not a separate incident but the new norm. She would now no longer partner Mr Darcy in any expedition. Instead she was left to tidy the lodge with Jane.

Of course, she enjoyed Jane's company and had no objection to spending hours talking with her, but there was a different sort of conversation one could have with a man, she realised, that one could not have with a woman—or perhaps the difference was between the conversation she could have with her sister and the conversation she could have with Mr Darcy.

Mr Darcy and Mr Bingley only returned to bring wood and eggs they collected for breakfast, and to inform the ladies that they would be starting work on a larger raft. Then they went off again. Elizabeth did not see Mr Darcy until he returned with Mr Bingley for the meals. They had rabbit and eggs for dinner. She was very proud of that rabbit, especially since it was Mr Darcy who collected it and returned with praise at how she had set up her snare.

But after the meal the men went away again, and only Bingley returned at some point to sit with Jane, for which Elizabeth tactfully removed herself, claiming the need for a walk. She saw Mr Darcy again in the evening, when he returned from apparently having dragged logs all day, looking tired and sweaty, and his muscles visibly bulging from all the exercise they have had in these past few days.

As they sat together in front of the fire, Bingley close to his wife, Darcy opposite Elizabeth, he talked of the difficulty in assembling the parts for another raft. The trouble was that the logs needed to be larger than the ones he had used to make the first raft, so that it could carry the four of them comfortably over a great distance. Hence, the first raft was of no use in the making of the second. The logistics of their endeavour were discussed in great detail, until everybody was exhausted. Then they went to sleep and Elizabeth realised that she and Mr Darcy had exchanged no more than two sentences the whole day long.
